| Torrent Files 101 |
| What is a torrent file? |
A .torrent file is what you will need to create in order to start making torrents. It is also the file you download when you want to download something. They are usually very small in size, just a few kbs
A .torrent file just contains information relating to the end file you are looking to share - information such as the file title, overall size, the amount of pieces the file has been broken down into and how big they are, the tracker tracking the file etc etc etc
When you open a .torrent file with your torrent client, the file tells your client what tracker it needs to connect to, and tells the tracker what file you are looking to share. You are then able to begin sharing Close |
| What Software Can I Use To Make Torrents? |
There are two main ways to create torrent files, one is to use specific BitTorrent clients that also give you the ability to create torrents like µTorrent or Azureus, the other is to use something like Make Torrent 2 which is designed solely to make torrents and nothing else. Close |
| How Do I Make A .torrent File Using Azureus? |
1. Open Azureus and select 'File' then 'Create A Torrent'
2. Make sure 'Use an external Tracker' and 'Directory' are checked
3. Enter http://tracker.audiozonetorrents.com/announce.php into the 'Announce URL' box and select then 'Next'
4. Now locate the folder that your file is in and click 'Next'
*note: Private Torrent option - This should be enabled if you intend to use a Private tracker for the torrent. A private tracker is one which requires registration. If you don't enable this option, it will allow some clients to connect to the torrent swarm through your client, completely bypassing the tracker (and any stats that may be recorded). If you are using a public tracker you do not need this option.
5. Leave the settings on the final screen alone, just hit 'Finish'. Azureus will then make your torrent for you.

| How Do I Make A .torrent File Using µTorrent? |
1. Open µTorrent and navigate "File > Create new torrent"
2. Click "Add Directory", locate the folder on your hard-drive and click "ok"
3. Add the announce url into the "Tracker URL" field http://tracker.audiozonetorrents.com/announce.php
4. Click "Create and save as". µTorrent will now make your torrent and then ask you where to save it. You might have a special folders for torrents, or you may prefer to keep the torrents in the same place as the folder it relates to. Either way don't forget where you put it!

| How Do I Make A .torrent File Using MakeTorrent2? |
1. Open Make Torrent 2 and click on the "classic" tab (this just changes the view) if you aren't on it already.
2. Next to the field called "Filename or Pathname" click on the "dir" button.
* make sure the "1 torrent from entire folder" button is checked.
3. Now locate the folder that your file is in and click "ok"
4. You should now see the pathname of the folder which contains your file for sharing in the "Filename or Pathname" field.
5. Add the announce url into the "Tracker" field http://tracker.audiozonetorrents.com/announce.php
6. Now click "Create .torrent now!" button
7. Make Torrent 2 will now create a .torrent file for you. This will take longer for big files. Once it has finished hit the "Finish" button!

| I Have Made My .torrent File, What Do I Do Next? |
Now you have made your .torrent file you will need to let everyone else know what you have to share. To do this you will need to upload it to audiozonetorrents.com refer to the instructions given on the upload page.
Once you have uploaded your .torrent file to a site or forum you will need to make sure it is also in your client and ready for seeding.
One way of doing this is to double click on the .torrent file and open it with your BitTorrent client.
You can also just click on the file you uploaded and choose to open it with your client like you would when you go to download someone else's file for sharing.
Your client will ask you where you want to save the file for "download". Make sure you select the same folder which already contains your file.
Your client will then check that folder, realise you already have the file and automatically begin seeding it (well, this is how it works with most mainstream clients).
If you are unsure on this stage have a look at the authors website of your client for more information.

| Why am I getting a torrent not found error? |
There could be two reasons.
If you are trying to leech a file that was there before it may have been removed from the site due to upload rule violations or that it was a corupt file and was reported.
If you are trying to upload or re-seed an old file you have and you are getting this error in your client it is most likely you moved it from it's original location on your hard drive. You will have to put it back to the same spot you had it when you made the torrent file. Close |
| What kind of compression should I use when making a file to upload? |
All files should be named properly and packaged using WinRar (Win) or Stuffit (Mac) at best compression. Then put into a folder with a complete name. Close |

| Error Messages |
| Aborting the torrent. Message from the tracker: Port xxxx is blacklisted. |
With Internet Service Providers limiting bandwidth for p2p networks becoming more and more common. Some Trackers are trying to "encourage" people to use non standard ports. By doing so they hope to increase upload bandwith, which will allow for a better speed for everyone.
To do so, the tracker rejects connections to IP addresses trying to connect with one of the standard ports.
This can be corrected by going into the options of your client and changing the listening port. If you are using a router you will have to open the same port for it also. www.portforwarding.com has good information on this subject. Close |
| Why do i show as unconnectable? |
The tracker can not establish what port you have open for a full torrent client connection. Your client and or firewall needs to be configured properly.
BitTorrent relies on two basic types of connection to share files, those made by other people asking you for something are called Incoming or Local Connection, and when you initiate a connection with someone else, you are making an Outgoing or Remote Connection.
This Option has been disabled. Use the port check page in the profile area menu to see if you can get a sucessful TCP connection while seeding/downloading a active torrent file from this website Close |
| Why am I getting an invalid pass key error? |
There is two kinds of passkey errors.
One being Passkey IP Mismatch, Visit the website then do a force update.
Other being Passkey does not exist, Redownload the torrent file... Keeping the existing data
If you are using a remote connection then you will have to obtain that location IP and use it in the server ip spot of the profile for your account.

| Error : Data Missing {Path to files} |
Somehow the download path is corrupt. Just stop your torrent and remove it in the client, move your files to another path, reload the torrent and point to the new path, make sure the files are hash checked and are not corrupt. This should fix your problem.

TorrentStorm.
Burst.
BitBuddy.
Shareaza.
XBT.
TurboBT.
To name a few .......bottom line if you get an error like this upgrade or change clients.
Close |
| Why am I getting a port banned or black listed error |
The reason these ports are banned is that these ports are known to most Internet Service Providers as default peer to peer ports and they throttle back your connection to these ports to slow your traffic down.
Bottom line is if you set your port to a non default port in your client you will have a better connection and better speed. Don't forget to change it in your firewall / router settings as well. Close |

| Hit And Run Warned |
Ah, So the system nailed ya?
Well heres the deal. The system looks for users that have stopped a torrent 12 hours or more ago with a torrent ratio under 0.40. If you are found having such you will have a 7 day download limit applied to your account. At witch time you can only download one torrent at a time. You can remove this warning for seeding the torrent non-stop for 6 hours or more. It will then remove the warning. But it will cycle again and again untill you reach the min 0.40 on that torrent where you have been warned. Donors do not get warning for 30 days. If you no longer have the files. You can donate or wait the 7 days out. Up to you
This is here as we have a problem with people leaving torrents after they completed Close |

| What is a VSTi ? |
VSTi (virtual studio technology instrument) was developed by Steinberg as a Universal platform for soft synths and samplers. Not all the companies bought into it. Cubase and Nuendo use it extensively. You may also hear about VST2 and VSTi2 plugins. VST2 is simply an extension of the VST format. These pass on more parameters to the host for automation.
Are PC VSTs and VSTi compatible on Macs? Always assume the answer is no unless the developer makes it clear. If they made a Mac version, they will be sure to list that. Usually, developers will have a PC VSTi version and a Mac VSTi version, so be careful to get (and install) the right one. Usually, these days they are both on the same cd rom.

| What does DXi mean? |
DXi: Cakewalk, initially, did not go with VSTi, it went with DXi, which is based on Microsoft direct X code. Today, however, they have relented an allow use of VSTis with Sonar in a shell. DXi's cannot be run on Macs. Close |
| What does AU stand for? |
AU, short for Audio Units, refers to a format developed by Apple for Mac OS 10.x Because there is support in Apple's operating system, AU is used by many Mac sequencers and audio applications, and is the major supported format in LogicPro.
Important note: Just because Logic favors AU does not mean it will run all Audio Unit Plugins. As of Logic 7, Apple got stricter. Logic only supports AUs that follow Apple's guidelines and not all of them do. This is Apple's way of forcing plugin developers to follow the rules it developed. Its a good thing, as the Audio Units that do pass are less likely to crash Logic. Close |
| What does the "i" stand for on VSTi and DXi .....? |
You see VST, then VSTi, then DX and DXi. The "i" stands for "instrument", like a softsynth or sampler to distinguish it from a plugin processor, like a compressor, reverb or delay. Close |
| What does MAS mean? |
MAS refers to plugins that work with the MOTU Audio System in Digital Performer (Mac only), which can also use VSTi, AU and ReWire. You'll note that fewer plugins support MAS, and that's because MOTU DP users can use AU as well as MAS. Close |
| What does RTAS? |
RTAS is the format used by Digidesign, the maker of Pro Tools LE, which comes bundled with the popular Digi 002 interface. RTAS will also work in Pro Tools M-Powered, which works with M-audio interfaces. RTAS plugins, however, will not work in Logic, Cubase or Sonar.
Close |
| What is Rewire? |
Rewire, is a scheme that pipes digital audio from Reason and Rebirth, Project 5 and Ableton's Live to other sequencers. It basically allows you to run a sequencer inside of a another sequencer. Its not a plugin per se, but because many soft synths use Rewire I include it here. Close |
| What is a Plugin Wrapper? |
A plugin wrapper usually refers to a software device that fools a host (i.e., the sequencer) into using formats that would be incompatible without it.
For example, in a VSTi to DXi shell you can run VSTis and the sequencer will treat them as DXis. Through the use of wrappers, Sonar users can use VSTis and Logic Users can use VSTis. Without a wrapper, Logic can only use AUs and Sonar (up to version 4) can only use DXis and Pro Tools LE not use VSTs.
There are some disadvantages to using wrappers. If the wrapper does not convert and pass on the data perfectly, there could be problems. Remember: Bad plugins crash sequencers.

| What ports should I use? |
The default ports are 6881-6889. But that does not mean to say that you have to or should use them.
Some ISP's throttle bandwidth on these ports, and some trackers have banned them because of that.
So choose a port of your own between 40,000 and 60,000.
In order to change the port all you need to do is choose a port.
Now open them up in your router or firewall as covered above, and then change the settings in your client to reflect the new ports being used. Each client is different so I can't really go into detail here.
Current Black listed ports are :
TCP-UDP 411
TCP-UDP 413
TCP-UDP 1214
TCP-UDP 4662
TCP-UDP 6346
TCP-UDP 6347
TCP-UDP 6699
6881 through 6889 are blacklisted as well Close |
| How Do I Configure My Firewall For BitTorrent? |
There are two types of Firewall, a Software Firewall and a Hardware Firewall, like a router for example. Both will need to be configured in order for you to use BitTorrent.
Hardware Firewalls and Routers
Routers have what is called NAT - Network Address Translation. Put simply it means that it will block all incoming connection attempts unless it is told otherwise. This means you need to open some ports. But you also need to do more than that, you also need to forward the ports. This is where the 'Translation' bit comes in.
Your router has 'ownership' of your (real) WAN* IP address and each PC connected to it is issued with a LAN** IP address. You need to tell the router that when traffic comes in on a certain port or port range it should let through and send it to your PC's LAN IP.
Here is a visual guide on how I set up my Router - it should help.
Static IP
You will also need to set up a static IP address. As mentioned, the router issues each PC connected to it with a LAN IP address. This can change however, for example when you reboot your PC.
Imagine that your pc has the LAN IP of 192.1.11.23. So you forward the BitTorrent ports to 192.1.11.23. Then you reboot your machine and when it comes back on, its LAN IP has changed to 192.1.11.24. Your port forwarding isn't going to work anymore as the ports aren't being forwarded to your PC anymore.
This is why you need to set up a Static IP, it gives your PC it's own permanent LAN IP. It'll never change, so the port forwarding will work!
Remember to do it on every pc that connects to the network.
*WAN = Wide Area Network - the internet basically
**LAN = Local Area Network - your internal network of PC's
This website will help you configure your router and set up a static IP. It covers nearly all of the routers available and also provides step by step instructions for common applications. www.portforward.com
Software Firewalls
A software firewall will work one of two ways, it will either imitate a hardware firewall and block all traffic on all ports unless told otherwise; or it will only allow specified applications access to the internet. The Windows XP firewall works on port configurations, and something like Zone Alarm works by granting programs access. Set your software up as the documintaion says.
